A basic guide to desktop PC memory.

Take a look at the memory section under motherboards for a run down of RAM types and clock speeds. When purchasing memory check to see if your Operating System can use that amount. Windows 32 bit can only use about 3gig of RAM maximum so anything more is a waste although sometimes it’s worth buying more if you plan to upgrade to 64 bit later. Try and go for known makes as unknown generic RAM may cause problems with your motherboard. If you are experiencing problems try to under clock the RAM in BIOS and also check voltage levels as some RAM may vary..
How much memory you need depends on your operating system and what you use your computer for. 256MB is recommended for WinME, 1GB for WinXP and 2GB for WinVista and Win7. Linux OS are around 512MB but depends on what version you’re running. If you play games or use the PC for video editing or music creation then at least double is recommended.
